The threads of immigration are intimately woven through the low-wage economy. As we debate immigration in the United States, it is working families whose daily lives are bound to suffer. Now, more than ever, it is critical that the faith community unite the voices of our prophets to say that immigrants are to be treated with fairness, justice, and compassion. Let us call for comprehensive and humane reform of our immigration laws, compassion for everyone in our communities, and together cry: Immigrants Are Welcome!
As sacred scripture tells us...
We learn in the Hebrew Bible that: "The strangers who sojourn with you shall be to you as the natives among you, and you shall love them as yourself; for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” (Leviticus 19:33-34)
In the New Testament, Jesus tells us to welcome the stranger, for "what you do to the least of my brethren, you do unto me.” (Matthew 25:40)
The Qur'an (4:36) tells us that we should “serve God…and do good to…orphans, those in need, neighbors who are near, neighbors who are strangers, the companion by your side, the wayfarer that you meet, [and those who have nothing].”
