2003-2004 Victories and Accomplishments

2004

Supported and prayed with striking grocery workers twice weekly during the 139 days of the strike (Winter 2003-Spring 2004).

In partnership with UFCW 135

 

ICWJ hosted its first Annual Benefit Breakfast to celebrate the partnership between the faith and labor communities in San Diego, and honoring faith, labor, and worker leaders in the struggle for economic justice for working families! (December)

 

Between 2002 and 2005, ICWJ supported employees of La Costa Resort & Spa through change of ownership and difficult contract negotiations which resulted in a strong contract ratified (December).

In partnership with UNITE HERE Local 30

 

 

2003

Witnessed negotiations and supported janitors at the San Diego International Airport who were able to secure full-family health care benefits for the first time, and better wages.

In partnership with Justice for Janitors, SEIU Local 2028

 

Supported 1,500 Downtown (second contract) and Suburban Janitors (first contract) through successful contraction negotiations. As a result of the partnership between Janitors and ICWJ, janitors in Downtown San Diego would receive full-family health care by May 2005.

Participated in three successful Head Start organizing campaigns with employees from the three different San Diego County Head Start providers.

Between November 2001 and 2003, with international recognition and in collaboration with CLUE LA, ICWJ played a critical role in moving the owner of Westfield Corporation, Inc. to take in-house their janitors and agree to pay them a responsible wages and provide benefits and respect on the job.
